and winning softball teams was a way of life in the Twin Tiers over the course of three decades,. Under the banner of the Painted Post Holiday Inn, the Rock-N-Horse Tavern, the Westside Tavern in big-ball along with such small-ball sponsors as Mac’s Grill, Green Spot, End Zone, Hi-Bar and Pierri’s, Duke was a mainstay of one of the best softball teams to ever participate in area, state and national tournaments. He was part of teams that included C-PP Hall of Famers, Jeff Ayers, Al Fusco, Rick Pruden and Jerry LeBaron that won nine New York State 16” Softball Tournament. It was at these tournaments that Duke played his best softball as a pitcher and infielder. But, perhaps his most shining moments came during back-to-back firth place finishes in the National Tournaments in 1989 at Greenfield, Indiana and in 1990 at Marshalltown, Iowa. Duke was named to the All-Tournament, Second Team in both of these tournaments and secured his place as a two-time All-American at the national softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Duke is a 1972 graduate of Corning East High where he also played baseball for four years.
