Gymnastics - 2002

Kristen Breitwise graduated from Corning West High School in 1995 following a six-year career as a member of the Corning District Gymnastics team. Kristen became a member of the high school gymnastics varsity team as a 7th-grader and made an immediate impact by breaking the school record on the balance beam with a score of 8.95. She finished third in balance beam, fourth in bars and all-around and sixth in floor exercise during sectionals. Those marks also made her eligible for States. Kristen qualified for the States all six years of her varsity career and only illness as an 8th grader prevented her from competing in six years. That gave her five years of competing in the state tournament. Beginning in her freshman season, Kristen competed in beam, floor, bars, vault and all around and qualified for the states in all four events for four years. Her best finish as a freshman was 16th in the floor exercise. As a sophomore, Kristen finished ninth at states in the vault and 13th in all around. As a junior and senior, Kristen was elected as a co-captain of the gymnastics team and once again led by example. She was the runner-up to the Section IV championship in the vault, floor and all around while finishing third on the beam and fourth on the bars. During her senior season, Kristen captured the Section IV Championship in vault, floor and beam. In the states that year, she finished 14th in vault. Following her senior season, Kristen was the co-winner of the Shelly McGannon Award as the Vikings outstanding senior female athlete. She was a member of six straight Section IV Gymnastics teams and was a member of the New York State Scholar Athlete Team as a junior and senior.
