STEVE CURRIE

Track - 2009

STEVE CURRIE graduated from Corning East High School in 1976 and from Corning Community College two years later. Steve played all the sports in high school but found his niche prior to his sophomore year at East when he went out for the track team. His speed and stamina were a perfect fit for the 880-yard run and he became an instant All-League performer in that event. During his first season on the team, Steve recorded five firsts and two seconds in eight meets with a best time in the 880 of 2:09.8. During his junior season, Steve placed first in a dozen meets and was second in the other four, losing close races twice to cross-town rival John Vine of West. His best time was 2:02.4. He also competed in the 440 and the mile relay. His performance earned him Track Athlete of the Year. He repeated that performance the next year as a senior this time racking up 10 wins in 11 meets. He finished the season with a win over Vine, and a best time of 1:58.4 tied a school record and was the best time of the year in the STC. Steve and his family still live in the Corning area where he competes in the adult lacrosse league, plays a little 3 on 3 hoops and some golf.
