JAMES DUGAN

Track & Field - 2010

JAMES DUGAN graduated from Corning East High in 1965 and was a member of the very first track & field and cross country teams for the Trojans. Jim was one of the top finishers for the cross country team as a junior and senior but it was with the track & field team that he made his mark. Running the two-mile event as junior, Jim won or finished second in every meet the Trojans had  and finished second in the Steuben County meet. During his senior season, Jim set a school record in the two-mile with a time 10:37.2 which lasted all of four days before he established a new mark with a time of 10:27.8. That record held for a couple of years. After six meets in his senior season, Jim was asked to compete in the mile run to try and defeat the best in the county and give East a shot at the county title. His first shot at the mile tied a school record and during the Steuben County Meet, Jim set a school record with a time of 4:35.5. He finished second in the meet but his effort helped the Trojans win the team title. His record for the mile stood for 17 years until it was broken in 1982. After graduation, he competed for the Corning Community College cross country team for two years.
