TOM DENEKA

Soccer - 2001

Tom Deneka graduated from Corning West High in 1993 and was a standout member of the Corning District Soccer team as a junior and senior. During his junior season for the Hawks, Tom led the STC in scoring while being named to the All-STC and All-Leader teams. Tom was second in scoring in the STC as a senior and once again was named All-STC and All-Leader. According to C-PP Hall of Fame coach Sandy Ostebo, Tom had a knack of scoring or assisting on key goals in big matches. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 overtime victory over Bath giving the Rams one of only two losses that year. Their other loss was in the state finals. Tom also assisted on the winning goal in overtime versus Horseheads in the Section IV quarterfinals. Tom went to Clarkson University where he played on the varsity as a freshman when the team reached the NCAA Division III Final Four. Due to a heavy academic load, Tom was unable to stay with the team. He is currently working for Corning Inc. and lives in the Corning area with his wife Mary. He stays active in the sport he loves by playing in a local adult league and last year helped coach the Corning USC Girls Under19 team.
