DANA ECKEL

Football - 2005

DANA ECKEL graduated from East High School in 1968 and was perhaps one of the most competitive football players ever to wear the Maroon and White colors. His tenacity on the field began his sophomore season when he started as a defensive back for the Trojans. Halfway through his junior season, Dana was able to crack the starting lineup in the talented offensive backfield of the Trojans. After four solid games as a running back an injury forced him to miss the rest of the season. He came back as a senior in the role of starting quarterback where he lead the league in rushing and touchdowns despite missing the last three and half games with a broken collar bone. He was named All-STC as a junior on defense and a senior on offense. Dana was awarded a full football scholarship to Duke University. Injuries once again curtailed his freshman and sophomore years and after dropping from Duke, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. Sadly, Dana's life was cut way too short when he died in a helicopter training accident off the coast of California on September 11,1978. The Dana Eckel Memorial Award is one of the most prestigious awards given each year at the East High Awards banquet.
