GEORGE FERO

Tennis - 1999

George Fero graduated from Corning Northside in 1944 and was a stalwart on both the table tennis team and the tennis team. In 1942 George was the Section V table tennis champion and in 1944 he won the Section V tennis championship in singles. He went on to the University of Michigan where he played both sports in intramurals. When George was in the service, he was stationed in Germany where he played in tennis tournaments almost every weekend and won most of the tournaments he entered. He helped revitalize the Elmira City Tennis League and won the doubles championship on three different occasions with three different partners. In 1986 George won the gold medal at the Senior New York State games in table tennis for the 55-59 age group. Four years later he played in the 1990 Senior Games in the tennis tournament and finished second after having played five matches in one day. The following year George competed in tennis in the National Senior Games that were held in Syracuse and lost in the quarter finals in both the singles and doubles portions of the tournaments. This last year George finally retired from the Elmira City tennis league and currently lives in Horseheads.
