John (Jake) Howitt graduated from Corning East High following a stellar four-year career on the Trojans track team. During his career, Jake led East High to two STC Championships and a Section V championship in 1980. As a senior he was the top point scorer for the Trojans as a high jumper and high hurdler. Jake was also one of the top three point-getters in his other three seasons of the track team. During his senior season, he established a school record of 6-9 in the high jump, a record that still stands today. He won a sectional championship in the high jump as both a junior and senior and finished sixth in the New York State competition as a senior. He took his talents to Virginia Tech where he competed and lettered for four seasons in indoor track and lettered in three seasons on the outdoor track squad. While at Virginia Tech, Jake established a personal best in the high jump with a leap of seven feet. Jake graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in aeronautical engineering and is currently living in Seattle, Washington.
