Ken Lane taught for 31 years in the Coming-Painted Post School District and during that period he coached 40 seasons of sports teams in the district. He started his coaching career as the wrestling coach at Northside-Blodgett. He also served five years as the golf coach at Corning East High. But, his true love of coaching came in the sport of tennis where he was at the helm of both the boys and girls teams at East for 33 seasons.
Among the many, many tennis players he coached in the 33 years were three of his four children making it truly a family experience. During his tenure as the Trojans tennis guru, Ken amassed 326 victories as against 149 losses. However, among his fondest teams was the squad that went 0-17 when he came back after a two-year absence. That team, made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores, nearly won the league championship.
Ken mentions a number of his best players, they include: Peter Havlik, Jim O'Brien, Scott Davenport, Mike Smith, Joe Hanak, Mike Lane, Paula Pease, Michelle Guiffrida, Barb Dates and Laura Hanak. He also had fond memories for special players such as Betsy Harvin, Jim O'Brien and Amy Snow, all of whom had special qualities as people
Of the 33 years as the tennis coach (keep in mind 2 teams), Ken only had four losing seasons. They were his first two and the first two after coming back from the two-year absence. Ken is currently living in Wellsboro with his wife Lois.
