DON PIERI’s induction into the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame is truly long overdue. Don began coaching basketball in the Corning School District in 1960 at Corning Free Academy. During his three years at CFA, he was 43-15. He was named the first basketball coach at Corning East High School when the district merged three high schools into two, Corning East and Corning West. He coached the Trojans basketball team for six years, compiling an 83-35 won-loss mark in a very difficult league. He will be best known and remembered for guiding the East High basketball program to its first (and still only) Sectional championship in the 1964-65 season. There was no state championship in those days but many believe this team (with players such as Pierce Baker, Joel Griffing, Greg Sutherland, Mike Tammaro, Jerry LeBaron and a host of talented sophomores off the bench) would have had a great chance to become a state championship team. Don finished his career with a 144-106 record. As good a coach as Don was, he was a better person and all his players truly enjoyed playing for him.
