Motorsports - 2001

Gary Shaw has been an active participant in motorsports in this area for more than 40 years beginning in the 1950's with drag racing. He continued as one of New York States' top drag racers until 1971 when he became interested in road racing and joined the Glen Region Sports Club of America (SCAA). He got into building engines and was responsible for building engine that Elmira's Fred Kepler drove to a fourth place finish in the SCCA National Championships. He became more involved in road racing and built a B Production Corvette for himself and went on to win the Class B Road Racing Championship Series in 1976. He competed in a number of other NYSRRC and SCCA events around the state and northeast and was considered one of the top drivers in any race he entered. He also competed in the Firestone Firehawk endurance races at Watkins Glen. On many occasions, Gary has served as an instructor at SCCA driving schools throughout the Northeast. Throughout his career, Gary was a top driver but was always willing to help others especially the new and young drivers.
