Armando Toppi came to Corning in the late 1970s to attend and play basketball at Corning Community College. Following his graduation from CCC, Armando chose to stay in the Corning area and has been a fixture around youth sports, especially basketball, ever since. He has been instrumental in the formation and organization of the Saturday youth basketball program at the Corning YMCA. During the mid 1980s to the late 1990s, Armando volunteered his time to help with the Corning West girls program and former coach Marge Tremaine gives a lot of credit to Armando for helping the Lady Vikings win the 1995 state championship when he served as the assistant coach. For a number of years he has coached the Crystal City Star in AAU competition all over the country. For 35 years, Armando has served as a counselor at the Camp Stella Maris youth camp located in Livonia. This past year in recognition of his efforts at the camp, one of two new cabins for the kids was named the ‘Mondo’ cabin in his honor.
