BOB TURNER

Wrestling - 2005

BOB  TURNER  graduated  from  Corning  Free  Academy  in  1962.  During  his  four  year  stint  as  a member of the varsity wrestling team, Bob turned in a record of 37 wins versus just six losses and two draws. Of the 37 wins, 26 were by pin. Five of his six losses were to wrestlers who won one or two Section V, Class A  or Class B  championships. In February  of  1962, Bob scored  a  21  victory  over undefeated  Dick  Moore  of  Geneva.  Moore  was  the  one  who  stopped  Stan  Gridley's  (of  Corning Northside)  49match  unbeaten  streak.  In  March  of  1962,  Bob  pinned  senior  Tom  Vergo  of  East Rochester in the Section V, Class A tournament. It was Vergo's only loss since his freshman season and the first time he had ever been pinned in his career. The next day, Bob lost a heartbreaking 21 decision to Greenard Poles of Madison in the finals. Poles was undefeated and went on to star at the University of Buffalo and play in the Canadian Football League. As a junior Bob was selected to the West Central AUStar team at the 180pound class and made the same team as a senior in the unlimited weight class. Bob was also a key member of the CFA football and track teams. Bob died way to early in life at the age of 30 in 1972.
