Track/Cross-Country - 1997

David Van Alstine graduated from Corning West High in 1968 following a track and cross country career as one of the Vikings most prolific long distance runners. His specialties were the one-mile and two-mile runs but also ran the 880 and participated in the four-mile relay events during the track season. Dave was one of the anchors of the undefeated West High cross country team in 1967. During his junior and senior seasons on the track team, Dave was a consistent winner for the Vikings in the 880 and mile run along with the grueling two-mile run. He set the two-mile record for West in 1968 with a time of 9:56.2. He was even more effective during the cross country season, especially with that 1967 undefeated team. In 12 meets that year, Dave finished first on five occasions and came in second in seven other meets. He also placed third in the sectionals that season and capped the year with an 8th place finish (out of 136 runners) in the State meet in Buffalo. Dave also played varsity basketball for the Vikings as a junior and senior. He still lives in the area with his family in Beaver Dams. He joins his coach Irv Snyder in the C-PP Hall of Fame.
